Encapsulant: A material that surrounds or embeds Asbestos fibers in an adhesive
matrix, to prevent release of fibers.
Fixed Items: Equipment, furniture, radiators, or other objects which cannot be
removed from the Work Area.
Friable Asbestos-Containing Material: Asbestos-Containing Material that can be
crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
HEPA Filtered Exhaust Units or Fans: A fan equipped with a High Efficiency
Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, greater than 99.97 percent efficient by 0.3 micron
monodispersed dioctyl phthalate (DOP) test, and complying with ANSI Z9.2
(1979), Local Exhaust Ventilation. It shall be used to create a negative pressure
ina Work Area (reduced with respect to surrounding areas) in order to prevent the
migration of Asbestos fibers. It shall also be used to reduce and control the
airborne concentration of Asbestos fibers.
HEPA Filtered Vacuum Collection Equipment (or Vacuum Cleaner): High
efficiency particulate air (absolute) filtered vacuum collection equipment with a
filter system capable of collecting and retaining Asbestos fibers. Filters should be
of 99.97% efficiency for retaining fibers of 0.3 microns or larger.
High-Efficiency Filter: A filter which removes from air 99.97% or more of
monodispersed dioctyl phthalate (DOP) particles which have a mean particle
diameter of 0.3 microns.
Industrial Hygienist: A professional qualified by education, training and
experience to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and develop controls for
occupational health hazards.
Isolation Barriers: The construction of partitions, the placement of solid
materials, and or two layers of polyethylene sheeting to seal off the Work Area
from surrounding areas, prevent air movement to and from Work Area and to
contain Asbestos fibers in the Work Area.
Log: An official record of all activities that occurred during the project and it
shall identify the building department, agent, contractor, workers, and other
pertinent information.
Negative Initial Exposure Assessment: A demonstration by the Contractor that
employee exposure during an operation is expected to be consistently below the
PEL.
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL): An exposure limit that 1s published and
enforced by OSHA as a legal standard.
