Over the past 12 to 15 years Nashua Fire Rescue has been a strong proponent of this system as a
means of securing the keys to a given property in our city. This system is widely used throughout
the country. The Knox Box is an actual safe locking mechanism to store the keys, with the local
Fire Department being the sole authority having access. We at NFR are looking to purchase and
install the Secure System for our apparatus. This locking devise not only affords us a secure
location to store the keys in our possession it will alert us the key has not been returned upon the
vehicle braking system being released. In the event a key was missing this system will let us
know the last person who had removed the key.
We are audited on a regular basis by the Knox Company, and to date we have passed all of our
audits that include an accounting of all in service keys, keys that have been bent or broken, and
all returned or new key orders. We have also been informed of a recent event in the City of
Phoenix, Arizona where the Fire Department was held responsible for replacing the locks to all
buildings covered by the Knox System due to losing keys. This liability can be managed most
effectively with the purchase and installation of the Knox Secure System.
At the Board of Fire Commission on February 6", they approved this purchase unanimously, for
the very reasons I’ve stated in this request.
Respectfully submitted
