details of the project, you will be convinced that it’s a way that we can save $20 or $25 million for Nashua
consumers over the next four years.
The next matter Madam President | wanted to remind all of the Board members that we have a budget
presentation on Thursday night before the Budget Committee. It will be upstairs because we’ve invited a lot of
people. We're going to project for you the way budgets and taxes could look given various rates of increase in
the city budget. Of course we’re focused particularly on the fact that health care costs are going up. A single
line item has been going up by several million dollars a year. That is a significant financial challenge we have to
deal with. | would encourage everyone to show up tomorrow and see the presentation, look at the numbers,
and then ask any questions or make any comments that you wish.
Finally Madam President, of course we have coming up this weekend MLK — Martin Luther King Day. There are
two celebrations at least. One at the First Baptist Church on Saturday night at 6 o’clock. That has been going
on for nearly 40 years. The other OBU is holding the annual Martin Luther King breakfast at Alpine Grove
again. That starts | think at 8:30 a.m. For those who don’t remember this, Nashua was actually the first city in
New Hampshire to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. This began in 1987, a dozen years before the State
celebrated Martin Luther King Day. | was Mayor then and thought the State’s not moving why doesn’t the city
just go forward. We put it on our list of holidays for January 1987 and we’ve been celebrating Martin Luther
King Day every year. We were trying to send the message then and now that in Nashua everyone belongs to
our community. There are no “us” and “them”. There is just “us” Nashuans. | hope that those who are
available can come and celebrate MLK Day at one of those events. That’s all | have Madam President.
