Franklin Street Genesis & History (cont’d)

¢ Finally, NSD has been renting space for its Title One program at a local
church for many years. Moving it to a permanent location will save

the annual rental costs for that program.

¢ The school district began looking for a permanent home for these
programs about two years ago, culminating in the purchase of 55
Franklin Street by the City late last winter. This was preceded by a
favorable assessment conducted by the architectural firm, Harriman
A/E. The building was most recently Nashua Christian Academy, so
there was history of the facility being used as a school.

¢ The plan was established to house the HS Alternative program, aka,
Brentwood Academy, on the third floor of the building. The pre-school
programs will occupy the 1% and 2"9 floors along with part of the basement
level. The Title One program was moved to Broad St Elementary, in space

vacated by the pre-school program there.

¢ Last Spring and Summer Plant Operations renovated and cleaned the
building, bringing it up to school standards and code. Improvements
included new fire alarm, public address, intercom and telephone systems.

¢ Fire Department determined that high school age students could not use
the same stairwells as pre-schoolers for emergency egress, so the 2" floor
could not be occupied this school year.

¢ Brentwood Academy moved into its spaces on the third floor at the
beginning of the school year. Since the 2"? floor couldn’t be used,
only the pre-school classrooms from Broad St Elementary were
moved to Franklin Street (1% floor, with OT/PT in the basement).

¢ The need to provide an alternative emergency egress for the
Brentwood Academy was originally the driving force for this bond
request. Other facility issues requiring upgrades (identified in the
Harriman A/E assessment) include ADA compliance in restrooms,
stairwells and building access; roof replacement; flooring
replacement; and asbestos abatement.

¢ We also knew the HVAC system was old (but still functioning) and
would need replacing at some point. Fortunately, ESSER funding
became available and HVAC is being addressed this summer (more on
this later).

Construction Team

¢ The JSSBC previously approved Harriman A/E as the architect &
engineering firm for this project, and Harvey Construction as the
construction manager.

¢ The Engineering Corporation was recently selected as the Traffic
Analysis consultant and SLR International Corporation was selected as
the Geotechnical Engineering consultant.

¢ Installation of exterior Emergency Egress Stairwells at either end of
the school. (Required for pre school occupancy of second floor.)

e Replacement of restroom fixtures and addition of ADA restrooms
¢ Replacement of stairwell handrails for ADA compliance.

¢ Installation of handicapped ramp at main entrance.

¢ Modifications to room and hallway layouts on all floors.

e Dumpster Enclosure & Basketball Half Court; other site work.

e Site work to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety.
