'TER 1. PLANNING PROCESS

saster Mitigation Action (DMA) of 2000 was signed into law on October 30, 2000. it amended the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief <
ency Assistance Act to include, among other changes, Section 322—Mitigation Planning. This section placed new emphasis on local
‘ion planning. It requires local governments to develop and submit hazard mitigation plans as a condition of receiving mitigation pre
under the Hazard Mitigation Assistance Annual Programs (including the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Program) and post-disaster Hazard
tion Grant Program (HMGP).

Jnicipality’s Hazard Mitigation Plan must be reviewed, revised as appropriate, and resubmitted to FEMA for approval within five yea
in approval date in order to maintain eligibility as an applicant for mitigation grants. During that five year period, municipalities are
‘aged to continue updating the plan’s assessment to vulnerability, adhere to its maintenance schedule, and begin implementing the
‘ion actions proposed in the plan when possible.
