ON THE QUESTION
Alderman Tencza
Thank you Madam President. | know that there has been a lot of discussion about this contract.
Throughout the last couple of years we’ve talked about the issue with the health insurance and | am glad it
is being addressed. This contract like the other contract we voted on today, | am not sure we should hold
it up over this issue with the healthcare or future budget cycles. | think Alderman Clemons said earlier
every year there are difficulties, we need to make difficult decisions here. | don’t see this contract as adding
to those difficult decisions, given the bargaining unit and the amount of the contract. Deputy Chief
Testaverde also talked about the difficulties in retaining people now within the Police Department which is
not just a problem for Nashua. | would think the Department of Nashua actually probably does a better job
of retaining but nevertheless, it is a competitive market. | think these benefits, or the costs associated with
this goes towards letting the Sergeants and the Lieutenants know that we value the work that they do and
we want them to stay in Nashua. So! am hoping that the Board supports this tonight.
