Board of Aldermen
229 Main Street
Nashua, NH 03060

To Members of the Board of Alderman:

Robert Hallowell, had submitted his resignation to the Board of Education, effective December 31,
2017. A citywide election will need to be scheduled in order to fill the vacancy on the Board of
Education for that unfinished term.

Charter Sec. 75 provides the methods by which vacancies on the Board of Education shall be filled.
Since there are “at least six (6) months and one (1) day remaining in the unexpired term” the
following process applies:

= The vacancy shall be filled by an election held on a date determined by the Board of
Aldermen.

« The date of that election shall not be earlier than forty (40) days and not later than one
hundred eighty (180) days after the vacancy occurs. Thus, the election may be scheduled
anytime between February 9" and June 29".

» All nominations for the Board of Education shall be handled in the same manner as
nominations for the Board of Education at a regularly-scheduled election.

= Nominating Petitions and Acceptances of Nominations shall be accepted by the City Clerk
“not earlier than forty (40) days nor later than thirty (30) days before the election.”

As part of this process, a Resolution should be introduced in the coming weeks so that the Board of
Aldermen may consider and schedule a date for this election, establish polling hours (RSA 659:4),
schedule the period during which candidates interested in completing the unfinished term may file
for office, and issuing precepts to the Selectmen of the wards (NRO 23-8).

Sincerely,

Patricia D. Piecuch
City Clerk
