Purchase of an overhead 360-degree vehicle detection camera (Daniel Webster
Highway at Danforth Road)
To approve the purchase of an overhead 360-degree vehicle detection camera
system from Electric Light Company for the Daniel Webster Highway/Danforth
Road signalized intersection in the amount of $25,460. Funding will be through:
Department 160 Admin/Engineering; Fund: Trust; Account Classification: 71
Equipment.
The existing vehicle detection cameras at this intersection have reached the end of
their useful life, and need to be replaced. We intend to replace the cameras with a
new 360 degree overhead GRIDSMART camera on an existing mast arm, using
developer contributions collected and deposited in the Daniel Webster Highway
traffic corridor account.
The proposed camera system is a superior detection device and will allow us to
assess system performance by gathering traffic counts in real time, enabling us to
make periodic adjustments to signal timings to maximize the efficiency of the
system. In addition, it will enable us to remotely troubleshoot issues, and track and
report on changes in traffic volumes and patterns over time.
