Finance Committee - 2/21/2018 Page 14

Mr. Boucher

This is the base of one of the four raw sewage pumps that we have. Typically, they don’t get replaced.
However, this one received some damage to the base. Between the pump and the base there is a wear ring.
Overtime this wear ring wore faster than we had expected and caused the pump to wear into the base so it’s
beyond repair and needs a new one put in place. Once this one is out, we will inspect all the other bases.
This is to replace this whole base so we can put a brand new air ring in it.

Alderman Laws

Do you know why it wore down?

Mr. Boucher

Probably because it wasn’t disassembled sooner. It’s a big task to disassemble them, but they have to be in
order to see the wear ring. These type of things normally get put on a maintenance schedule. You assume
how many years the wear ring will last. | wasn’t here, so | don’t know when the last time it was disassembled
to look at the wear ring.

Alderman Laws

Can you safely assume under your purview this isn’t going to happen again?

Mr. Boucher

It won’t because the foremen are putting togheter a program. | know we have Cardigraph here, which all this
equipment will go into. We will have work orders that will come up that will tell us when it needs to be

disassembled. There’s a lot of pumps that have to go into this program, but that’s the goal: to have everything
on a maintenance program so nothing like this gets missed in the future.

Alderwoman Kelly

You said there’s other wear rings and you’re going to inspect them after this one is replaced. Is that correct?
Mr. Boucher

Yes, that’s correct. You can't take them all off line, but we can safely take one off line, pull it out. Some of
these pedestals can be repaired. They can be machined. We do have an older one sitting there that we are
going to send out for inspection to see if we can use it as a spare. Once this one is back in place then we will

take another one apart, but we always have to have three in case we have wet weather events, high storms.
More than one pump runs at one time so we have to make sure we don’t have too many down at once.

Alderwoman Kelly

Are you assuming they are all around the same age?
Mr. Boucher

I’m not sure.

Alderwoman Kelly

| Know you’re new.
