Intermediate Cover shall be soil containing no stone larger than 1 inch, and
shall have a maximum of 75 percent passing the No. 40 sieve and a minimum
of 35 percent passing the No. 200 sieve.
Crushed Glass, or other drainage material approved by ENGINEER, may be
used as a substitute to Crushed Stone backfill in gas collection trenches.
Crushed Glass used as backfill shall be substantially free from organic
materials, soil, wood, trash, and other objectionable materials.
Sand shall consist primarily of particles with 100 percent passing the 3-in.
sieve, 70 to 100 percent passing the No. 4 sieve, and no more than 10% passing
the No. 200 sieve.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL EXCAVATION BELOW GRADE
A.
CONTRACTOR shall plan and perform earthwork activities to prevent damage
to existing structures, safeguard people and property, minimize disruptions to
site traffic, protect the structures to be installed, and provide safe working
conditions in compliance with local safety regulations and provisions of the
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
Excavation shall be made to the elevations, grades, and dimensions shown on
the Drawings. Excavate sufficient material to provide suitable room for
construction providing bracing and support as required.
3.2 EXCAVATION IN WASTE
A.
CONTRACTOR shall take safety precautions during construction activities that
conform to all OSHA regulations and the safety requirements of OWNER and
the Specifications.
Trenches shall be excavated to the depths, widths, and alignments shown on
the Drawings.
CONTRACTOR shall separate cover soil from excavated waste to the extent
possible. Cover soil may be used to backfill trenches. Excavated material not
