SECTION 02111

REMOVAL OF UNDOCUMENTED ASBESTOS FROM UNDERGROUND UTILITIES

PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 SCOPE OF WORK

THE CONTRACTOR IS ADVISED THAT DEFINITIONS USED HEREIN MAY BE
MORE STRINGENT THAN REGULATORY AND OR INDUSTRY STANDARD.
IT IS THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CAREFULLY REVIEW ALL
PORTIONS OF THE SPECIFICATIONS TO PROPERLY EXECUTE THE WORK.

A. This Section specifies the requirements for the removal and disposal of asbestos-
containing materials (ACM) that are not otherwise identified in the Contract Documents
and are discovered during demolition, trenching or excavating operations at the Work
Site. The Work includes, but is not limited to, the removal of the following Asbestos-
Containing Materials:

Asbestos Cement Pipe or Duct

Asbestos (Friable or Non Friable) Encased in Concrete
Asbestos Insulated Electrical Cable

Asbestos Insulated Pipe or Pipe Fittings

Baghouse Materials

B. The intent of the Work is to completely remove and dispose of all undocumented ACM
to permit the demolition of structures and/or trenching or excavation activities. It 1s the
Contractor’s responsibility to determine the most efficient method to perform this work.

This specification does not dictate any specific methods to be implemented in the
performance of the Work. All ACM shall be removed inclusive of any substrate
contamination, whether present on the substrate surface or embedded in the matrix of the
substrate component. After abatement is complete, no detectable asbestos shall remain
within the work area.

C. Should asbestos cement pipe (ACP) or small quantities of asbestos be found, the City
may remove that material using qualified personnel from the Solid Waste Department.
The Contractor will assist with the removal process by removing as much material as
possible around the ACP or small quantities of material found, provide a trench box to
permit safe conditions for the City personnel to remove the material. The Contractor
should immediately notify the Engineer who will make arrangements with the Solid
Waste Department for the removal of this material.
