Discussion:

City of Nashua, Public Works Division

Board of Public Works Meeting Date: September 28, 2017

Stephen Dookran, P.E., City Engineer
Engineering Department

Northeastern Boulevard Sidewalk

To approve the use of SW Quadrant Funds in an amount not to exceed $28,000 and
the use of Northeast Boulevard Sidewalk Trust Funds in an amount not to exceed
$12,235 as the City’s contribution towards the construction by White Family
Ventures of 1,200 LF of sidewalk on Northeastern Boulevard between Pittsburgh
Avenue and Main Dunstable Road. Funding will be through Department: 160
Admin & Engineering; Fund: Trust; Account Category 54: Property Services
Construction Services.

Proposed Northeastern Blvd Sidewalk Area Map

As a result of a site plan approval, the developer is required to complete the sidewalk
connection from the new Walden Woods site (off Pittsburgh Avenue) to the commercial
area on Main Dunstable Road and will be constructing “fill-in” areas of sidewalks only.
There are a large number of pedestrians that use this corridor and high traffic volumes on
this road. However, large portions of the existing sidewalk are in a deteriorated condition
and the asphalt curbing is damaged. In order to have a complete sidewalk in a good and
safe condition for the entire length, it is necessary for the City to partner with the
developer to complete the project.

The estimate of the cost to construct 1,200 LF of sidewalk and an enhanced crosswalk is
$120,000. The cost appears reasonable for the work. The City would contribute a total
of $40,000 from the sidewalk funds that would repair about 300 feet of sidewalk and
install approximately 1,000 LF of granite curbing. The developer, White Family
Ventures, will put in the remaining $78,000 towards the project and manage the
construction.
